University Accreditation

What is accreditation?

Accreditation is a review process that determines if a university meets a set of standards. According to the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the body that accredits Â鶹´«Ã½, “the goal of accreditation is to assure students, as well as parents and employers, that a college or university provides a quality educational experience.â€

Â鶹´«Ã½ Illinois University was first accredited in 1913 and has maintained continuous accreditation since then. Every ten years Â鶹´«Ã½ undergoes a reaffirmation of its accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission. The process is an opportunity to strengthen the university through a comprehensive evaluation.

Most recent reaffirmation of accreditation

The Higher Learning Commission that Â鶹´«Ã½ Illinois University has been reaccredited for 10 years, with the next re-affirmation of accreditation review scheduled for 2030-31.

That announcement followed a long process during which a task force and a writing team gathered information, and drafted a lengthy assurance argument that was submitted to HLC along with evidence that university meets the high-quality standards demanded by HLC. The process included visits with all constituent groups across the university. Then in March 2021, the HLC's on-site review team visited the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses, for a comprehensive review that included numerous meetings with faculty, staff, students, administration, the Board of Trustees and community leaders in both locations. The visit also included a close review of the University's assurance argument, federal compliance forms and numerous other documents, websites and more.

Below are the documents and evidence files that were submitted to HLC in 2021.

After the review, Â鶹´«Ã½ was allowed to select which pathway we wanted to pursue for accreditation: Standard or Open. Â鶹´«Ã½ selected the Open Pathway.

What is the Open Pathway?

The Open Pathway is designed primarily for institutions that have completed at least one pathway cycle and are otherwise eligible to choose their pathway. The Open Pathway supports the pursuit of innovative or strategic improvement projects, known as Quality Initiatives.

Institutions on the Open Pathway typically undergo a virtual Assurance Review in Year 4. All institutions on the Open Pathway complete a Quality Initiative on a topic of their choice during Years 5–9 and undergo a comprehensive evaluation in Year 10.

Open Pathway Year 4 Review

In Year 4, peer reviewers evaluate the institution based on HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation and other requirements. The review typically occurs virtually, without a visit to campus.

For Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s Year 4 Review, we prepared our Assurance Filing by updating our 2021 assurance argument and evidence file. This filing was submitted March 24, 2025.

A team of peer reviewers will evaluate the institution’s assurance filing. The outcome of this review is a recommendation as to whether the institution is in compliance with the Criteria for Accreditation and other HLC requirements. The Assurance Review conducted in Year 4 of the Open Pathway does not include an on-site visit unless the team determines one is necessary to explore uncertainties in evidence that cannot be resolved at a distance or if a sanction is being considered.

A decision-making body reviews the institution’s documentation and the recommendation from the peer review team and takes an official action.

The updated assurance argument and evidence files that were submitted to HLC in 2025 are below:
