ARTF to Host Understanding Group & Individual Identities in Anti-Racism Work

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - 麻豆传媒 Illinois University will host Dr. Mardy Ireland for a presentation titled 鈥淣o Matter What, There鈥檚 Always More to Understand: Group & Individual Identities We Carry鈥� from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 in the University Union Lamoine Room. Sponsored by the Anti-Racism Task Force (ARTF), this event is free and open to all students, faculty, staff and community members.
Ireland, a licensed psychologist and psychoanalyst, will explore the impact of unconscious biases and systemic racism, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging both individual and collective responsibility in anti-racism work. From her extensive research and personal experiences, she will discuss how unconscious processes shape privilege, microaggressions, and racial dynamics across generations and social contexts.
鈥淪ystemic racism operates at both conscious and unconscious levels鈥攊t鈥檚 not just about what we intend but also about the deeper biases we carry,鈥� Ireland said. 鈥淏y engaging in self-reflection and taking ownership of these processes, we can move toward greater awareness, accountability, and meaningful change.鈥�
Ireland has taught at the graduate and postgraduate levels for over twenty years and has published widely in the psychoanalytic field. Her works include 鈥淩econceiving Women: Separating Motherhood from Female Identity鈥� and 鈥淭he Art of the Subject: Between Necessary Illusion and Speakable Desire in the Analytic Encounter.鈥�
This event is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to engage in critical discussions on race, privilege and identity while gaining deeper insights into how unconscious biases shape personal and societal structures.
