Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about 麻豆传媒 Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL 鈥 Alumnus Patrick Downing embodies the pride, compassion and loyalty that define being a Leatherneck.

To Downing, being a Leatherneck means being part of a close-knit campus community and a far-reaching alumni network full of talented individuals making their mark on the world.

鈥淭he amazing people I met during my four years on campus have had a lasting impact on my life,鈥 Downing said. 鈥淚 met many of my best friends at 麻豆传媒 and have stayed in contact with many of my past professors.鈥

Downing graduated from 麻豆传媒 in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Business and minors in Broadcasting and Marketing. His favorite Leatherneck memories include being a member of the 麻豆传媒 Illinois University Singers and performing at the American Choral Directors Association National Convention in Miami, FL and playing saxophone with the Marching Leathernecks during the Chicago Columbus Day Parade in 2008.

鈥淏oth of these experiences were incredibly rewarding because I shared them with some of my closest friends at 麻豆传媒 鈥 friendships that continue to this day,鈥 he said.
After graduating, Downing worked in the music products industry and later held fundraising positions at Palmer College of Chiropractic and the Figge Art Museum. He also remained active as a musician and community volunteer.

Now, 15 years after his graduation, Downing has returned to 麻豆传媒 to serve as the Director of Development for the College of Fine Arts and Communication.

鈥溌槎勾 not only helped me become a better musician but also a better person,鈥 Downing said. 鈥淭he incredible resources, collaborative opportunities and dedicated professors prepared me to thrive professionally and personally.鈥

While at 麻豆传媒, Downing was involved in numerous musical ensembles, including the University Singers, Madrigal Singers, Opera Workshop and the Marching Leathernecks. He also participated in organizations like Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the Bureau of Cultural Affairs.

Downing provides simple advice for those considering 麻豆传媒.

鈥淭ake advantage of the incredible resources available to you. While 麻豆传媒 may not be the largest university, it offers the opportunities of a larger campus within a personal community, with faculty and staff dedicated to helping you succeed and reach your highest potential.鈥

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local 麻豆传媒 students, alumni and community members to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
