125 Anniversary Celebration: Urmila Palla
November 4, 2024
Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of stories about Â鶹´«Ã½ Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB, IL – Urmila Palla, a student in Public Health, chose Â鶹´«Ã½ because of the endless opportunities.
"When I think of Â鶹´«Ã½, I think about the endless growth opportunities, learning and making core memories. It's a place that shapes not only my knowledge but also my friendships," Palla said.
To Palla, being a Leatherneck means embracing a tradition of courage, unity and perseverance.
"It's being a part of a supportive community that encourages growth, facing challenges head on and striving for success with integrity and strength," Palla said.
Her favorite memory at Â鶹´«Ã½ is welcoming new internal students as she serves as an ambassador.
"It brings back the same excitement and anticipation I felt when I first arrived. Seeing their eager faces and helping them settle in made me relive that thrilling moment of stepping into a new chapter, just as I did when I first got here. It was a full circle experience, and I loved being part of their journey," Palla said.
Palla stays involved on campus through the Indian Student Association, where she serves as president, and serves as a public relations officer for the Health Science Graduate Student Association.
"My advice to students would be to embrace every opportunity the university offers both academically and socially. Â鶹´«Ã½ has a strong sense of community so get involved — whether through clubs, leadership roles or campus events. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The connections and skills you build at Â鶹´«Ã½ will stay with you long after graduation," Palla said.
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local Â鶹´«Ã½ students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
